Why a Quick Look at the Teeth Is Not Enough

Most dental disease happens where you cannot see it. Plaque hardens into tartar, tartar pushes under the gumline, and the infection that follows can loosen teeth, damage the bone around them, and send bacteria into the bloodstream. Because dogs and cats are so good at hiding discomfort, a pet who is still eating and playing may already have painful problems at the roots.

That is why a proper assessment needs anesthesia. Under anesthesia we can examine every tooth, measure the pockets around them, and take dental X-rays when they are indicated. Brushing at home helps slow things down, but it cannot replace a professional cleaning. Our dental disease prevention page covers what you can do between visits, and our blog post on what happens during a professional dental cleaning walks through the process in more detail.

What Happens at a Dental Cleaning Visit

We want you to know what to expect before your pet comes in. A typical visit looks like this:

  • Exam and conversation. We review your pet’s history and what you have noticed at home.
  • Pre-anesthetic exam. We check that your pet is a good candidate for anesthesia, and we may recommend bloodwork first.
  • Cleaning under anesthesia. While your pet is monitored, we scale above and below the gumline, polish, and probe each tooth.
  • X-rays when indicated. These show what the naked eye cannot, including problems in the roots.
  • A plan for anything we find. If a tooth needs attention, we talk with you before moving forward. Learn more about tooth extraction and dental surgery.
  • Aftercare. We go over home care and any follow-up you will need.

Our practice is Fear Free certified, so we keep handling calm and low stress from check-in to recovery. Details on dental cleanings and sedation dentistry are on our service pages.

Signs Your Pet May Need a Dental Exam

Dental pain is easy to miss. Keep an eye out for:

  • Breath that smells worse than usual or does not improve
  • Yellow or brown buildup along the gumline
  • Red, swollen, or bleeding gums
  • Dropping food, chewing on one side, or turning away from hard kibble
  • Pawing at the mouth or pulling away when you touch the face
  • Drooling more than normal, or blood on a chew toy
  • In cats, a change in grooming habits or a sudden preference for soft food

Any one of these is a good reason to book an exam. Dental disease is progressive, and catching it early is almost always easier on your pet and your budget.
